1. Work experience

DeepMind – Research Engineer Intern

June- September 2022

Worked as a Research Engineer Intern, where I was able to apply both the more abstract mathematical problem-solving knowledge from my Mathematics course and my engineering skills for my internship project, while gaining more insight into how DeepMind research projects work.

Empathy.co – Data Engineering Intern

June- July 2020

During the Summer of 2020, I worked for Empathy.co, a company which develops search engines and customer experiences inside clients' websites. I worked building an alert system to detect outliers, which will help clients find performance peaks and troughs in their data and predict future trends and possible strategies to follow (make bikinis earlier than other years, design purple swimsuits...). My job was mainly signal forecasting. It was important that the model took long-term growing/diminising trends, as well as seasonal components, and for it to give estimates for days with large amounts of traffic, such as Black Friday or sales. Also, it could not overfit, looking at small details of the previous days (maybe there was bad weather and slightly more users browsed the website), which should not be a big component of the prediction of following days, losing sight of the bigger picture and missing possible outliers. To overcome this difficulty, I designed a series of hybrid models, combining more robust techniques, such as Fast Fourier Transform or autoregression, with more robust methods, such as sequential and convolutional neural networks. You can learn more about this project here.

Merkle Divisadero – Data Scientist

July 2019

During the Summer of 2019, I landed my first job and worked for Merkle Divisadero's Data Discovery team for one month, soon after having won the Datathon organised by the business, together with the Polytechnic School of Engineering in the University of Oviedo. It was a very enriching experience in which I applied what I had learned through books and online university courses to real projects, such as using TensorFlow to build consumer propensity models to predict behaviour along a customer journey and to try to stop them abandoning it half-way.

Aside from this, I wrote scripts to check data integrity with SQL and optimised data clearning and extraction processes in Apache Spark, bringing their execution down by a factor of about 1000.

2. Education

University of Oxford- Mathematics and Computer Science

October 2020- June 2024

I am studying a 4-year course, formed by a joint honours Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Computer Science (finishing in 2023) and a Master's degree in this same subject (finishing in 2024). I am a member of St Hugh's College.

English School of Asturias- International A-Levels, iGCSEs

September 2006- June 2020

I have studied since Nursery in the English School of a Asturias, a school in Spain following the British education system. I have therefore received nearly all my lessons in English ever since I started and am thus bilingual.

Even though the school is not in the United Kingdom, we take the international versions of British examinations: IGCSEs and International A-Levels. I went straight from Year 7 to Year 9 and therefore graduated one year early than corresponding. I was House Captain in both Primary and Secondary.

8. Other Merits

Chairwoman of the Spanish Informatics Olympiad for Girls (OIFem)

October 2020- present

Sponsored by large tech firms such as Amazon and BBVA, we teach competitive programming to teenage girls in Spain, helping them to enter the tech industry through technical coaching, mentoring, networking and competing for the possibility to represent Spain in the European Girls' Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI). Successes include admissions to top universities worldwide, EGOI bronze medal (second edition to happen next month) and a gender parity much closer to 50% in Spanish regional olympiads and national finals.

Udemy "Competitive Programming" Online Course

Summer 2021

During Summer 2021, I created a best-selling online course called "Competitive Programming", where I taught graph algorithms, dynamic programming and game theory, among other topics useful for competitors. I now have over 7000 students from 148 countries.

Member of the Scientific Committee, member of the Verification Committee of the Spanish Informatics Olympiad

October 2020- present; March 2022- present

As a member of the Scientific Committee, I design and test mathematical and algorithmic challenges for the olympiad, which is used on each season to select the 4-student team that represents Spain internationally. As a member of the Verification Committee, I act as a liaison between the Olympiad and the Spanish Ministry of Education.

Member of the Scientific Committee (max. 2 per country) of the Western European Olympiad in Informatics (WEOI)

October 2022- present

Countries participating in the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) usually participate every year in regional-international olympiads, such as the Central European Olympiad in Informatics (CEOI), the Iberoamerican Olympiad in Informatics (CIIC), etc. Each country participating in the WEOI can select up to two representatives for the technical tasks: problem setting and solving. My role here, where I represent Spain, therefore consists of ensuring that the WEOI is a challenging and fun contest for high-achieving teenagers in Europe. The first edition will take place in Summer 2023.

Computer Science Ambassador at the University of Oxford

November 2021- present

I was chosen by the Department of Computer Science to be an Ambassador, representing the Department in outreach activities, with the aim of increasing diversity in the student body. This includes talks to schools explaining my projects and helping to organise open days and other events.

Problem setter and tester at the Madrid Informatics Olympiad

2022 Edition

I was a problem setter for the 2022 edition of the Madrid Informatics Olympiad. This involved the design of a problem for the competition, testing of the rest of the problems in Python and Spanish to English translation of the problem statements.

Keynote speaker and mentor of C1b3rwall Academy

2021/22 Edition

I was a keynote speaker of C1b3rwall Academy 2021/22, where I taught about algorithmic bias. C1b3rwall Academy is an online course with tens of thousands of students all over the world every year. I was also a mentor and the representative and image of the course on social media.

Keynote speaker of the IV National Cyberleague GC

2022 Edition

The Spanish Civil Guard, the public organisation in charge of the Defence of the Spanish country in terms of cybersecurity, organises a yearly competition in this subject for students. On every edition they select a keynote speaker, who also acts as a mentor for the students throughout the final stages of the competition and is the image of the contest on social media.
